SPLIT is the second largest city and the largest passenger port in Croatia. It was built within the walls of the former palace of Emperor Diocletian. It was this place on the coast of the crystalline Adriatic Sea that he chose to build his palace to live in after his retirement. Today, the palace's walls have been partially adapted into residential and commercial premises, and strolling through the narrow streets one can still feel the atmosphere of ancient times here. In 1979, Split's old town was listed as a UNESCO site.
