Crete: Knossos, Lassithi plateau - local trip

The Knossos Palace is one of the largest archaeological places. Undoubtedly it's on the number one place on the list of places to visit. Knossos was the capital of Minoan Crete and the Palace was the administrative center of the whole island. By visiting this magnificent archaeological complex you will be able to admire numerous chambers, including the Great Throne Room, the Royal Rooms, as well as the artisans' rooms, impressive amphitheater and courtyard. On the grounds of the Palace you can see objects, pots and frescoes from the Minoan civilization. According to Greek mythology, Dedalus built his famous maze right here, under the Grand Palace of Knossos. Strolling through the ruins of the Palace you will hear legends about the Minotaur, half bull, half man, and Theseus, who decided to defeat the monster. You will find out how the love of beautiful Ariadne and her thread saved the life of this young brave man.

After getting acquainted with the magnificent monuments of the Minoan civilization, you will take awinding, mountainous road to the next point of the program. The Lassithi plateau is a green, flat plain at an altitude of 840 m and is surrounded by the mountains. The road to the plateau provides with many impressions. The time has stopped on the plateau. Traditional Cretan villages stretch around, creating a unique atmosphere.The program includes visits to ethnographic museums, monasteries and the Diktaen Cave, also known as the Zeus cave. According to legend, the mighty Greek god was born right here. There is a small lake in the cave and plenty of impressive stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is at an altitude of 1025m n.m. so that after climbing to the top you will see the best possible panoramic view of the Lassithi Plateau.
